Spotting a Boron Deficiency

Hen and chick syndrome caused by lack of boron during fruit development.

Boron Deficiency in Grapes

Boron deficiency commonly reduces fruit set with bunches of small seedless berries and bunches of berries of varying sizes (known as “hens and chicks”). In severe cases of boron deficiency, no normal fruit develops. The young leaves show an interveinal chlorosis, and when the deficiency is severe they may be deformed. Internodes are short and ultimately the growing points die.
